Since 1608, when the first Polish settlers arrived at Jamestown, VA, Polish people have been an important part of America's history and culture. With that in mind, this year we will mark the 410th anniversary of the First Polish Settlers by saluting All American Workers. Ours were among the first skilled workers in America and, in their honor, this month we urge people to purchase the products and services offered by American workers. For this recognition and much more Polish American Heritage Month was created more than 37 years ago in Philadelphia, PA, and became a national celebration of Polish history, culture and pride. Learn more about this annual event and other Polish-American events and history at . It's great to see that Polish-American history and pride are well represented in the "Great Mosaic of America."

National Pierogi Day:  We REALLY celebrated our favorite delicate dumpling
Here in the Mahoning Valley we kicked off the month with our largest National       Pierogi Day event yet ---selling out at more than 450 dozen pierogi and pledging to double that offering in 2019! Federal Street, Downtown Youngstown. These free, monthly lunchtime discussions cover a variety of topics and give attendees a chance to explore local history in a casual setting. In response to our speaker invite, we reached out to Polish Arts Club of Youngstown, Krakusy Society, Polish Legion of American Veterans and the area Polish churches for a submission on their history. A valiant effort for humans and animals
PolishYoungstown is co-hosting a book club discussion with the Youngstown Area Delta Zeta Alumnae of the book Zoo Keepers Wife. The book by Diane Ackerman has also been adapted into a popular film, but is a worthwhile read. The book tells the remarkable WWII story of Jan Zabinski, the director of the Warsaw Zoo, and his wife, Antonina, who, with courage and coolheaded ingenuity, sheltered 300 Jews as well as Polish resisters in their villa and in animal cages and sheds. Members of the Delta Zeta book club and YSU English Festival co-chair Angela Messenger will be on hand to lead the discussion. All are welcome. Zapraszamy! Thursday,October 18, 2018, at 7:00 pm at the cafe in Barnes & Noble in Boardman.
