Summer Salads Feature the Best of the Season
Salads are an important component of the Polish culinary repertoire, no matter how cold the weather. As in most cultures, appetizer salads and main-course salads exist, but the two most popular you will see served at breakfast, on buffets, with a meal, as a snack and at other times of the day fall into the categories of surówka and sałatka.  A sałatka typically is a cold salad made of cooked ingredients. It might include chicken, tuna, ham, beef, frankfurter, egg and other cooked proteins dressed with sour cream or Polish mayonnaise. Others are made with cooked vegetables like potatoes, potatoes and herring, beets and others. A surówka is a cold salad made with raw ingredients like grated carrot and apple, sauerkraut and fresh cabbage, beets, radishes and more. Surówki typically accompany hot meals and change based on seasonal produce.  One wildly popular item is mizeria which literally meaning "misery," but is really anything but that. A favorite of Queen Bona Sforza, this sliced cucumbers in sour cream salad could become your favorite, too. Try it out with this recipe.

Polish veterans in cycling challenge across US
Three Polish soldiers who have served in Afghanistan are pedaling across the United States in a cycling challenge during which they are paying homage to their fallen comrades. Adam Lewkowski, Michał Paćko and Sebastian Stępniak plan to complete their almost 6,000-kilometre trek from the west to the east coast of America in 44 days, each day honoring one Polish soldier killed in Afghanistan. During their epic memorial journey from Los Angeles to New York from June 15 to July 28, the Polish soldiers are trying to draw attention to the problem of post-traumatic stress disorder, a condition that affects many war veterans. Lewkowski and Paćko were injured while fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan.  The soldiers have already travelled through six states, sometimes braving harsh desert and mountain conditions and making unscheduled stops every now and then to fix flat tires. This weekend the three cyclists plan to reach the Chicago which is said to be home to the world’s second-largest population of Poles after Warsaw.

Costco customers devastated after Polish dogs removed from menu
Costco is making some changes on the food court menu and customers are not pleased. In fact, they're so upset they've started a petition to get it back. The company has removed the Polish dog from the menu to try new things like a acai bowl topped with granola and fresh fruit or the meat-free "Al Pastor" salad and the backlash has been crazy! Many fans of this popular item have taken to social media to beg for its return, while others are calling for a boycott of Costco. Costco's decision to cut the Polish hot dog from its menu has sparked some serious backlash. "Polish dog off the menu? What are you thinking??" one person commented on Costco's Facebook page. "Getting rid of the Polish Dog!!! Is nothing sacred anymore???" commented another. "Please don't take this away," wrote a third person, recalling childhood memories of eating the Polish dog at Costco. "This means more to me than you could ever know." A Change.org petition calling for the Polish dog to remain on the menu has more than 500 signatures in less than a week.
